Great! Have heard from three other folks who have not posted that they plan to be there. So looks like we've got a group growing.

Cool, Harry. Lightning tree campground is not that big (it's the last one up the lake on the east side), but there will be some sort of sign in board posted on the bulletin board at the camp entrance. Bring a steak and come for the pot luck Saturday night ( oct 5th).
Hope you'll have your fishing gear with you. See you there

Bill Ward is in ! 11 Years, 2 Months ago
Hi Folks, Thanks for all reminders and messages about coming to this minibash at Davis. I am planning on making it! It has been a really long time since my last minibash with board members. I am really looking forward to it both for the fishing and getting to see some old friends and making new friends as well. I will be staying tuned now as final details come out. I will be coming up in my toyota tacoma with a camper shell and plan to sleep inside the camper shell. If anybody knows there will be room in their campsite to accomdate my truck I will be happy to share the campsite costs. Thanks Folks!

Nice conversation with Jay Fair ! 11 Years, 2 Months ago
In anticipation of making it to Davis lake either before or after my wedding commitment on the 5th I am in the process of getting gear, especially flys together I will need. Not having fished lakes a lot I am very short of those kinds of flys like Jay Fair's famous "wiggle tail". I figured I would purchase a few to use as patterns for tying them myself. I found a web site site for Glenn and Jay Fair materials, flys etc and called their number. I first talked to Glenn, Jay's son and he was extremely helpful and friendly. He then handed the phone to his Dad Jay and we had a wonderful conversation as well! I told him I felt very honored to have the opportunity to talk to a legend in fly fishing like Jay Fair! He brushed that off and told me stories about him starting to fly fish at the age of about 10. In his early days he would fish days upon days, probably averaging over 100 days a year. He just turned 90 this last week! He asked me if I had time to talk and then took all kinds of time sharing more stories with me including how he came up with his flys and how he fishes them. What an amazing fellow and his son is a chip off the old block. Their web site is very simple and ordering from them is very simple old school. I told him in general what I wanted and he said he would put together an order for me with samples of flies and materials for tying and then just mail it to me and I would in turn use a self addressed envelope to write them a check!! Talk about old school and trust! I am sure you would not find any other business on the intenet that operates that way. I received my order yesterdat with wonderful samples of the flys and materials. In it there was also a hand drawn map of Davis Lake with lots of notes about fishing areas on the west side of the lake that Glenn put together! Holy cow! I look forward to talking to Glenn and possibly Jay today thanking them for the order and their incredible customer service.

Bill arriving Oct 6 - Some Questions? 11 Years, 2 Months ago
Hi Folks! I am back in the mix to join the group for some fishing at least after October 5. Working around my wedding commitment October 5th my plan now is to leave for Davis Lake early the next day arriving sometime before or around noon. I will then stay for several days going home either Wednesday or Thursday. I understand Betty you will be there, possibly Chsrles and maybe some others for some time into the next week. I am hoping there would be a camp site being used by one of you that I could pull my Toyota Tacoma with Camper shell that I plan to sleep in and I could share costs and space for the next few days. Not really having much experience fishing Davis I have a few questions I hope folks can help me with to be better prepared. I understand our group will be camping at Lightening Tree on the East Side of the lake. From my reading it seems the West Side of the lake is touted as being the best fishing. I wanted to confirm in general where you all plan to fish? Does the group scatter and fish all over or is the focus in one area and if so where? I will have my float tube and have now decided I will also bring my Hobie Quest kayak to have the option of covering more water. Is fishing the west side feasible from Lighting Tree without driving over to the West side of the lake? Anybody else plan to have more than just a float tube? Right now I am planning on bringing my guitar and weather permitting and folks there wanting to listen I would share some music around a campfire. Thanks for the help and look forward to seeing folks up there!

Re:Bill arriving Oct 6 - Some Questions? 11 Years, 2 Months ago
Hi Bill
Great. Yes, I will be there. Can't speak for others, but I think there will be others. There will be a sign up at the entrance to Lightning Tree campground (5 miles up lake, on east side), saying where folks are (or were, if they left on sunday). Since I don't know how many are staying, can't say what spaces will be available for sharing, but I'm sure whoever is there will take you in if they have room. Single spaces hold 2 vehicles as a rule and doubles can hold as many as four vehicles.

Generally folks will put heads together in the evening as to where they will fish the next day. In the fall, I generally stay in the northern part of the lake at Fairview or Mosquito Slough. Fishing has always been good there in the fall, and these are just a little further on up the road (about another 2 miles) from our campground. There's tons of water to fish there. There are good signs, along the road (which becomes dirt) marking the fishing access points (like fairview, etc) when you leave the campground. Think bringing a kayak is a good idea---gives you more options as to how far you can go. Bring an anchor if you have one, in case you want to indicator fish (if you do that). Also, county law says a pfd is necessary.

Look forward to seeing you. Don't hesitate to email if you have further questions.
Betty

PS
Check out flyfishwithdon.com for good advice about the lake (fishing report is old, but otherwise good stuff) Also www.portola-ca.com is the website for the grizzly store at the lake. Good map there.

Thanks Betty ! 11 Years, 2 Months ago
Hi Betty, I really appreciate the help! That all sounds good. Yes I do like to indicator fish having done most of mine on rivers and streams. This year however I did use an indicator for tjhe first time on a lake, Fuller lake and had some success. Unlike using an intermediate sink line and not knowing how deep my fly was I felt comfortable with my indicator knowing how deep my fly was. I will bring my kayak with an anchor and PFD. I think that will be real nice to be able to cover more water and explore the lake more.

I look forward to seeing you as well and hopefully some of the rest of the gang for a while. DOn't know if I have your e-mail, If you would send me a message at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and then I will have it for sure. Thanks again!
